The central Vietnam photography workshop

Here is a little something about the 3 day photography workshop that I am running monthly around Hoi An, central Vietnam. Some people have asked me to give them some more details about the tour so I will share with everyone. I usually give little information about the tours on the website as things in this part of the world get copied very quickly.

3 years ago, after receiving several requests from expats in Asia to create a longer tour including several aspects of photography (mostly people and landscapes) I started this special photography workshop.

The idea to be based around Hoi An was obvious as I am getting very very familiar with the area, having ran photography tours here for 7 years. But also going away from Hoi An was a very exciting opportunity to discover new areas, completely off the grid.

Hoi An and its surroundings, for a start, makes perfect for people photography. For the first half of the tour, we mostly focus on people, and the way to approach them in photography; working on composition techniques and also making sure all participants are up to date with camera settings.

We are going to visit fishing and farming villages, busy green fields and markets. This is also a time to introduce landscape photography as we do a few night shootings in Hoi An old town.

Then it is time for us to head towards Tam Giang lagoon, South of Hue. This huge lagoon stretches on about 40km and is home to plenty of small villages. We also make a stop for the sunset in Lang Co lagoon, picture perfect for practicing landscape photography.

On the last day and after the last sunrise, we head back to Hoi An for the final photo review of all participants. Each person will present a body of work of 10 images, for group discussions and even more composition techniques.

For 2016 the tours will be starting in March (celebrating the 8th edition of this workshop!), when winter has left central Vietnam. As every year, I will be inviting another photographer to bring even more coaching and knowledge for groups over 5 participants (and limiting the total number to 10 people). Each month, the photographer will come with a specific background: photojournalism, landscapes, travel, editorial, etc….

For people feeling like they need a week end break as well as some intensive photography workshop, this is the perfect opportunity. Danang (30km from Hoi An) has direct flights to Siem Reap, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul.

    Hello Etienne,
I don’t know if you would remember me but I came to you for some photography lessons and we went with a bunch of ladies somewhere on the boat to a rice paddies where we had fun taking shots of the small village, the people and the rice planters.

I will be back to Danang and will stay once again at the Nam Hai Hotel from the March 1st late afternoon to the 8th. Will you be conducting lessons again during this time and if so, I would like to join.

We are leaving Zurich Switzerland in 2 hrs enroute to Saigon where we will stay till Tuesday. Then onto the Nam Hai. Please let me know if there are any classes i could join. Thanks.
